Cinnamon Apple Crumble for Fall
One of my favorite things about the start of fall is enjoying the harvest of fresh apples and one of my favorite recipes is this super simple Cinnamon Apple Crumble. I like nothing more than curling up on the sofa in front of the TV or listening to music on my Airpods and eating a delicious warm bowl of this Cinnamon apple goodness. It’s like a giant warm hug in a bowl.
Apples are often considered a superfood and have an impressive list of nutritional and health credentials, including vein health-boosting properties. They have anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce swelling associated with varicose veins and even strengthen vein walls. A bioflavonoid in apples called Rutin helps to prevent blood clots from forming. And remember that apple nutrition is maximized if you eat the peels!
Around our house apples are a top healthy snack–we eat them whole or sliced, and for a treat, we’ll serve them with dipping caramel. My kids will eat so many apples this way!
But apples are more than just a snack: they make beautiful desserts. Warm apple pie is a big-time favorite in our family. Another long-time favorite at our house comes from my family tradition growing up, apple crumble.
Not familiar with apple crumble? (Or just want to hear me describe one?) Imagine a delicious apple pie filling with no pie crust and instead topped with a crunchy, cinnamon-y topping. We serve it in a bowl with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream on top. It’s basically an unstructured apple pie, warm and gooey and with a surprise crunch!
Any type of apple can be used, but we like granny smith or honey crisp the best. When I was a girl we would pick whatever apples looked good on our backyard apple trees for our crumble. I would say to use your favorite pie apple as a start and see if you like it.
I like to peel my apples for this recipe since the kids prefer that, but it’s a personal preference, and both peeled or unpeeled make a delicious crumble.
