People with varicose veins are at increased risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), potentially fatal blood clots forming in the deep veins of the legs or arms. Without treatment, these clots can break off and head to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. A less life-threatening but still serious condition related to DVT is post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), which can cause chronic, painful swelling, skin ulceration and discoloration. New, interventional treatment options now relieve DVT symptoms and destroys the clots.
Most patients diagnosed with DVT still receive the standard treatment, which involves prescription blood thinners and the wearing of compression stockings. While standard treatment help keep clots from getting larger or new clot development, they don’t actually remove them. If a patient does not respond well to conventional treatment, or if their clot is especially large, that’s when new, interventional treatment is recommended.
Your doctor may recommend interventional DVT treatment not only if your clot is large, but if you experience any of these conditions:

Patients undergoing DVT interventional therapy are regularly monitored. It’s a small price to pay for knowing blood clots shouldn’t cause you a problem.
