Varicose veins are a growing concern for people around the world. Since these unsightly veins are so common, there's a lot of information floating around about them. Sadly, however, everything that you've heard about varicose veins isn't true, and some of the most enduring myths actually stop people from seeking treatment. So once and for all, it's time to put these myths to rest and give you the information you need to properly treat your varicose veins.

Varicose Veins Aren't Dangerous

How often have you heard that varicose veins are simply a cosmetic problem? That's patently false. Not only do these troublesome veins cause pain, swelling, itchiness and numbness, but they can also lead to the development of potentially life-threatening blood clots. Rather than a cosmetic issue that you should ignore, varicose veins are actually a legitimate medical problem that should be addressed by a physician sooner rather than later.

Compression Stockings Are For Everyone

When seeing varicose vein patients for the first time, doctors will often recommend the use of compression stockings as the first form of treatment. Yes, these tight-fitting stocks can help with some aspects of varicose veins, but they're not a good first measure for everyone. In fact, the Society for Vascular Surgery recommends that patients who are good candidates for ablation therapy should receive it straightaway. Far too often, patients who try compression stockings end up needing ablation treatment eventually, so physicians are better off jumping straight to the more effective treatment.

Vein Treatment Can Impair Quality of Life

Varicose veins often appear in older patients, and a lot of the time these patients are dealing with a wide variety of medical concerns. Due to the compounding nature of these problems, patients are told that treating their varicose veins could be unsafe or further dampen their quality of life. In reality, however, the exact opposite is true. Dealing with vein issues can dramatically improve quality of life and allow patients to better address their other medical concerns.

Varicose Vein Procedures Don't Work

Have you been told that treating your varicose veins is pointless because the problem will just recur? Years ago, that may have been true, but modern vein treatments are incredibly effective. For many patients, sclerotherapy destroys the affected veins and keeps them from coming back. In more severe cases, doctors may use laser or radiowave ablation therapy to close off the veins, stop the blood flow and allow them to be reabsorbed by the body. For the majority of patients, these methods are effective enough to get rid of varicose veins permanently.

If you've been putting off treatment because of one of these myths, then don't delay any longer. Treating varicose veins has never been easier, so check with a doctor in your area for more information on how you can get rid of these troublesome veins for good.
