Early Signs of Varicose Veins and How to Prevent Them

by Jane Meggitt

No one wants gnarly, ugly varicose veins to develop on their legs. Not only are they unsightly – goodbye shorts or mini-dresses – but they can prove dangerous. While there is no sure fire way to prevent varicose vein development, recognizing the early symptoms of varicose veins and taking action might stop these veins from appearing.

Warning Signs

Varicose veins may seem to come out of nowhere, but there are early warning signs. If your legs ever feel swollen or heavy, that’s a hint of incipient varicose vein development. So is discomfort behind the knee, especially if you spend most of your time sitting or standing. Other symptoms include muscle cramping and kind of leg pain. Restless leg syndrome may occur during sleep, when you have a constant, unstoppable urge to move your legs. No matter the problem, always listen to your body. It tries to tell you when something is amiss.

On the Move

Women are more prone to varicose veins than men, and sedentary people in general are more likely to develop them. Good circulation comes with movement, so walking and exercise is a good way to stave off bulging veins. If your job has you stuck behind a computer all day, take regular breaks and just walk around the office. Even shaking your legs periodically under your desk aids blood flow. Go for a stroll during lunch and make a habit of walking after work. When you’re watching TV or working on your home computer, put your feet up. Avoid wearing high heels, unless it’s a truly special occasion.

Compression Stockings

If you experience these early warning signs, remember the adage of an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure. Start a regular exercise program, and lose weight if necessary. Purchase compression stockings to to wear in all but the hottest weather. Compression socks or stockings, available at pharmacies or medical supply stores, help prevent the blood pooling resulting in varicose veins by promoting blood flow. Don’t worry – modern compression stockings and socks are quite stylish. No one need know they have therapeutic along with fashion value.

If, despite your best efforts, varicose veins do appear, seek treatment from a vein specialist as soon as possible. Relatively simple outpatient treatment can eliminate varicose veins and allow you to show your legs off proudly in public once more.
