Coffee, or any form of caffeine, constricts blood vessels. It causes blood pressure to rise. Does your morning cup of coffee aggravate varicose veins? Should you avoid tea, chocolate, certain soda and other caffeine sources to protect your venous walls? The answer is … maybe.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when valves and veins weaken, generally in the legs. If the valve in the vein isn’t working properly, a blood buildup occurs, causing pressure. Before long, the veins bulge and appear gnarly. High blood pressure can strain your veins. Anything that contributes to high blood pressure, such as caffeine and salt, worsens the problem.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer.” Most people suffering from high blood pressure do not realize they have it, although those with very high blood pressure may experience headaches and achiness. Although high blood pressure can weaken venous walls, varicose veins are among the less serious effects of high blood pressure. Also known as hypertension, this condition can lead to stroke, heart attacks, kidney failure, blood clots, eye issues and aneurysms. It may contribute to dementia. Millions of people die every year from the effects of untreated hypertension.

It’s crucial to have your doctor check your blood pressure regularly and prescribe medication to lower blood pressure if warranted.

Diet and Exercise

If you suffer from mild hypertension, diet and exercise can help reduce your blood pressure. Diet and exercise also reduces the risk of developing varicose veins. Hypertension and varicose veins are often hereditary. Trauma, pregnancy and constant standing or sitting are additional contributory factors to varicose vein development. Walking, meanwhile, is a both a good form of exercise and helps get blood flowing.

Along with exercise, keeping your feet elevated when watching TV or otherwise relaxing and not spending excessive amounts of time sitting can prevent varicose veins. If you do have varicose veins, wearing compression stockings can help and ease any discomfort.

So What About Coffee?

If you can’t face the day without a cup of java, don’t panic. A few cups a day probably won’t make much difference when it comes to varicose veins. However, if you’re a serious coffee addict, or also consume lots of other caffeine-related drinks or foods during the day, it’s wise to cut back. The same holds true if you have high blood pressure. Your doctor will let you know how much coffee consumption is safe for you.
